I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest service valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the water main isolation valve or a tap to the fixture, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Once you have stopped the leak from worsening, give our emergency plumber a call, at any hour of the day or night. We will be there quickly to resolve the issue.

While you are waiting for the plumber to arrive, clear away any significant things close to the leak, and mop up any water or position a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.
