I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest location or at the mains valve outside. If you can’t locate the main shutoff valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the pipework and reduce the leak.

Now give our on call plumbers a ring, any hour of the day or night. We will be there as soon as we can to resolve the problem.

While waiting, clear away any important items close to the leak, and wipe up any water or place a bucket to catch any drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, switch off the hot water heating as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.

Remember, many appliances and fixtures have their own isolating taps also.
